Wrestler Andrade to wrap up Winter Sports at states

Congratulations to S-E varsity athletes who reached the postseason of the 2022-2023 Winter Sports season! Here’s a glance at what’s still going on and what already happened:
 
~ WrestlingLandon Andrade (2/2023)
Sophomore co-captain Landon Andrade will wrap up the Marauders’ winter season this weekend at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Division II Championships at MVP Arena in Albany. Landon will take his 30-3 record into a first-round 285-pound match against John Glenn senior Melkin Alfaro-Chavez (22-1) on Friday, with the winner advancing to face second-seeded senior Trent Sibble (47-1) of Bolivar-Richburg. The top 285-pound seed in Division II is Warrensburg/Lake George senior Tristen Hitchcock (43-0).

Landon is the fifth Marauders' wrestler to compete in a state tournament this winter as teammates Selina Moore, Pasley French, Leonora Serrano and Gabby Naylor took part in the inaugural NYSPHSAA Girls Wrestling Invitational in January.

Opening ceremonies start at 9:30 a.m. Friday, followed by first-round matches at 10 a.m. Championship finals are scheduled to start at 6:05 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are managed by MVP Arena and are sold on-site at the ticket window or in advance through Ticketmaster (additional fees apply). Tickets cost $12 at the box office or $17.70 through Ticketmaster for single sessions; $36/$45.40 for all sessions (general admission); or $56/$67.80 for all sessions with premium seating for the finals only.

~ Boys Basketball
S-E’s season ended February 16 with a 53-48 loss to host South Lewis in the opening round of the Section III Class C Tournament. Darren Miles (14 points) and Nick Hull (12 points) hit four three-pointers apiece for the Marauders (5-16), who received 10 points from Jack Rodman and eight from Rylan Sigman.
 
~ Girls Basketball
S-E followed a 50-33 win over Beaver River on February 16 with a 57-47 overtime loss to Cooperstown on February 18 in the Section III Class C Tournament.
Trinity Thornton had 16 points and eight rebounds, Chesnee Miller contributed 11 points and seven steals, and Hannah Todd-Rogers grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds in the first-round victory. Against Cooperstown, the Marauders (10-12) received 13 points and 13 rebounds from Hannah, 10 points and 13 rebounds from Trinity, 11 points from Alex Grzymkowski, and nine points from Chesnee.
 
~ Bowling
Senior Jacob Jenkins finished his fifth season as a varsity bowler February 16 during the Section 3 Individual Shootout at Pin-O-Rama Lanes in Utica. One of 42 competing for just two spots on the Section III Composite Team, Jacob averaged 171 over six games.
 
~ Swimming
Eighth-graders Ava Flanagan and Parker McCracken, freshman Robert Schaefer, and junior Amon Van Alst joined Hamilton junior teammate Emma Crespi at the Section III State Qualifiers on February 17 at Syracuse Nottingham.
Amon placed third overall in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:11.92, shaving 1.5 seconds of his winning time during the Section III Class C Championships on February 15 at Nottingham. He also competed for the Marauders’ 200 and 400 free relay teams, which both featured personal-best split times for all members.
 
~ Indoor Track and Field
Senior Lily Stoddard achieved a personal record of 32 feet, 7.25 inches in the weight throw to place 14th during the Section III State Qualifiers on February 15 at Onondaga Community College.
