Two wrestlers place at states

Landon Andrade at states (2/2024)Congratulations to Sherburne-Earlville juniors Landon Andrade and Jackson Moore on their podium finishes during the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Division II Wrestling Championships, which ran February 23-24 at MVP Arena in Albany.

Landon went 3-2 at states and placed fourth in Division II at 285 pounds. After pinning his first two opponents – Red Hook’s Mark Paschal (1:59) and Central Valley Academy’s Jeremy McRedmond (1:50) – Landon dropped a 10-6 decision in a state semifinal to Troy Beeman of Waverly. Troy went on to win the state championship, 9-4 in sudden-victory overtime, against previously unbeaten William Wortkoetter of Wilson.

Landon pinned Saranac’s Dylan Cogswell (4:53) in a consolation semifinal before falling to Wilson’s Hamza Merrick by pin (1:35) in the third-place match. Landon, who entered the tournament as Division II’s No. 1 seed at 285 pounds, finished his junior campaign with a 39-4 record and is 90-17 in three varsity seasons.

Jackson also went 3-2 at states and placed seventh in Division II at 108 pounds. He beat Medina’s Reece Senske, 8-7, before falling by pin in the quarterfinals (3:24) to eventual state champion Maverick Beckwith of Norwich. Jackson followed with a 4-2 win over Jackson Moore at states (2/2024)Salem/Cambridge’s Luke Leblanc and a loss by pin (1:51) to Tioga’s Kadin Cole to set up a rematch with Reece in the seventh-place match. Jackson secured seventh place with a 7-2 triumph.

Jackson entered the tournament as Division II’s No. 8 seed at 108 pounds. He completed his first varsity wrestling season with a 28-8 record.

S-E wrestling coach Greg DuVall and his staff, which included Paul DuVall, Garrett DuVall and Tyler Rice, produced three placewinners in state tournaments this season. In addition to Landon and Jackson, senior Selina Moore placed third at 145 pounds during the second annual NYSPHSAA Girls Wrestling Invitational at Onondaga Community College in January.

S-E also won four wrestling team championships this season as it placed first at the Section 3 Division II Class D Tournament, the Center States League Tournament, the Denny Wright Duals and the Cato-Meridian Blue Devil Duals.
