Sweet banner for Agriculture program

The New York State School Boards Association honored the Sherburne-Earlville Central School District with a Champions of Change for Kids banner Tuesday. Click to find out why!

The New York State School Boards Association honored the Sherburne-Earlville Central School District with a Champions of Change for Kids banner Tuesday, February 25, for the completion of its Maple Sugar Shack Agricultural Project.

The afternoon ceremony drew several students, staff and special guests to the Middle School/High School Auditorium, including close to 30 members of an FFA program that recently turned a storage shed into a production facility for maple byproducts. FFA members helped to refurbish the one-story wooden building, which operates right across from the Chobani Greenhouse for Sherburne-Earlville.

SECSD Superintendent Eric Schnabl welcomed representatives from the NYSSBA and Chobani, which also received recognition for assisting local school districts such as S-E, Norwich, Edmeston, Unadilla Valley and several others every day. Specifically at SECSD, the locally owned and operated Chobani has donated time, money and its Greek-yogurt products to help eliminate student-lunch debt, support the annual Farmers Appreciation Breakfast, and build a greenhouse.

NYSSBA Executive Director Robert Schneider presented a Champions of Change for Kids banner to Chobani’s Senior Director of Public Affairs, Mark Broadhurst, before SECSD teachers Scott Bugbee and Nicole Chiappetta accepted one from NYSSBA Area 4 Director Sandy Ruffo. Technology teacher Bugbee worked closely with Chobani two years ago to bring a greenhouse to S-E, which ultimately led to the revival of the agriculture and FFA programs and the need for Chiappetta to oversee both.
