Milk cartons (file)Dear Sherburne-Earlville Families,

There is a national shortage of half-pint milk cartons. As a result, schools throughout the country are determining the best way to serve milk with school meals. Currently, our supplier is still able to send us cartons. When cartons are no longer available, the district will have to change how milk is served and is working with the DCMO BOCES School Lunch Management Team. We will continue to provide as many milk options as possible (1% white, white skim, fat-free chocolate, or 1% chocolate), but that may be limited by our supplier.

The New York State Education Department has given a few options for consideration. Districts may pour milk from larger containers into individual cups or offer an alternate form of fluid milk, such as low-fat, fat-free lactose-free milk, or reduced-lactose fluid milk.

The district intends to follow the first option by providing individual cups to students. Cafeteria staff will provide directions to students on how to get their milk. To be clear, this is not a milk shortage and there is no issue with the milk supply itself, rather a cardboard shortage only. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Casey Castle at 607-674-7323.

Sincerely,
Robert G. Berson
Superintendent of Schools
