S-E kids explore opportunities

 Career Day group

Sherburne-Earlville students have been busy looking at some options for life after high school thanks to a series of field trips this month.

Chenango Valley Technologies, a custom-injection molding company, opened its doors October 4 for Manufacturing Day in Chenango County. Suzanne Winton, Candice Poyer, Scott Bugbee and Nicole Chiappetta accompanied their respective classes and other interested students on a tour of the manufacturing facility. They all had a chance to observe the plastic-injection molding process and gain insight into the opportunities available in this $523 billion industry. CVT gave us free snacks, too, so double-bonus!

A group of S-E students also attended the 13th annual Syracuse Construction Career Day on October 10 at the NYS Fairgrounds, where they received free safety goggles, a hard hat and a free lunch. This event featured hands-on demonstrations, the operation of static equipment, and career/continuing education booths related to all of the construction trades (masonry, electrical, insulation, heating, plumbing, carpentry, welding, painting, finishing, etc.).

It’s never too early to start thinking about post-graduation plans, either, as a small group of our eighth-graders took part in SUNY Oneonta’s Career & College Destinations Discovery field trip October 15. Kids took a career-interest assessment, then explored two career-destinations sessions to learn more about their interests. The trip included a tour of the college’s dining hall, dorm rooms and recreational facility, and ended with an ice-cream treat.
